Davide Galbiati

  • Born in Italy, Davide Galbiati was 28 years old when he chose to forego his original path and began dedicating himself to the development of his art. He then undertook intense training at an institute in South Tyrol and in 2007, following a spate of shows, won his first art prize. In 2012, Davide and his wife relocated to France where he continues to create great sculptural works from his modest studio space.

Davide is very conscious that as an artist he has a responsibility to make the soul visible to human eyes. With great skill and unique vision, Davide sculpts concrete and wood to unearth beings beneath the surface.

With his wooden artworks he draws inspiration from the relationship between trees and the human being. Most recently he wanted to go further as an artist and find new ways to express his creativity through different mediums, such as concrete. This allowed him to journey into the unknown and provided new challenges.

Davide’s curiosity has led him to experiment with this medium with a strange paradox: that opposites can work together: on the one hand it is an extremely subtle material that transforms itself; on the other, a medium which is despised, artificial…and inert.

Like the medieval alchemist who tried to change lead into gold, Davide Galbiati wants to transform grey concrete into living, breathing stone. This is what a gifted chemist does. It’s a question of mixing substances, finding the right proportions, controlling the temperature, the level of moisture, the length of time the concrete needs to harden. What he’s trying to produce is a new substance that is more pliable to the wishes of the human hand, yet will also prove more durable and resistant to the passage of time.

  • Davide Galbiati work is collected worldwide and he has had numerous collective and personal shows across Italy, France and the UK. He has been awarded a number of notable prizes for his sculptures, including:

2016 - Puvis de Chavanne Prize - Sculpture Prize - Salon des Beaux Arts, Paris, France.

2009 - SATURART - GENOVA Prize - Contemporary Art Prize, Italy.

2008 - Contemporary Art Prize - Novara, Italy

2007 - Mondadori Art Prize - Palais de la Permanent, Milan, Italy.
