  • Jackie Summerfield’s interests lie in human and animal forms, which she approaches in a realistic, but stylised way. The techniques she applies range from traditional handbuilding and slabbing, to moulding, press and slip casting. These slip-cast pieces are often finished with an earthenware crackle glaze. For larger pieces, Jackie uses Earthstone Original stoneware clay, which may be finished with other earthenware glazes.

Jackie Summerfield’s original ceramic sculptures have been showcased all across the UK. She’s been involved with Open Houses in Sussex and participated in the British Craft Trade fair, which encouraged her to send work to galleries further afield, to North Wales and Newcastle. After securing a prize for sculpture from the Pure Arts Group, Battle, Jackie was invited to participate in an exclusive group show at the Saatchi Gallery in London.

  • British-born artist Jackie Summerfield first discovered her love for 3D materials during her foundation years (1974-6), which led to a degree in glass and ceramics. However, she soon realised that she preferred the immediacy, texture and feel of working in clay.

In the 1980s, Jackie began selling work at a stall in Camden Market, London. A move from Hastings to the city helped ease the strain, and a studio in the Metropolitan workshops allowed Jackie to focus on creating one-off sculptural pieces - mainly stylised animals - for exhibitions and commissions.

Jackie has been teaching ceramics at Sussex Coast College for over 10 years.
