Sam Peacock

  • Sam Peacock is a Sussex-based artist. His work draws focus on the back story behind the region’s past; the old pathways and tracks, the chalk hills and in particular, the Cinque Port areas used for trade over the generations.

Since graduating with a BA Hons in Fine Art in the mid 90’s Sam Peacock has shown his art at various locations around the world. He has had solo shows in London, Sydney and Berlin, which have focussed on issues such as deforestation, hydraulic fracturing, and the regeneration of towns and cities. Sam has also been commissioned to create collections for various corporate clients including Novotel Hotel, Sydney University in NSW, Australia, and Old Oak Common Housing in London.

All the work that Sam Peacock produces is on steel. He works into his metal canvases with a variety of materials including coffee, tea, paraffin wax, industrial oil paint and chalk - seeking deeper meaning within the materials used. Some elements have direct links to the landscapes he is creating, others draw connection with the processes of trade and commerce.

The application of flame in Sam Peacock’s art practice has remained a central theme throughout the development of his artistic practice. He has always used fire, either in the form of an open kiln - which he has at the studio - a pit fire, or through more targeted heat distribution in the form of a propane / butane burner.
Sam Peacock is fascinated by the way the hills and forests meet the ocean around the Sussex peninsular. He spends his study time away from the studio detecting metals and sketching the natural undulations he sees within the land, which helps him form a better understanding of the area he wishes to paint.
