Pierre Diamantopoulo MRSS: Flight of the Langoustine

We are honoured to be the partner gallery for the Hove Plinth's Flight of the Langoustine created by sculptor Pierre Diamantopoulo MRSS. The ambitious community art project is the brainchild of Hove Civic Society.

KMA will exclusively offer individual bronze editions based on the Flight of the Langoustine sculpture for sale. Available from the gallery from 30th September, displayed alongside a small collection of original works by Pierre.

Pierre Diamantopoulo tells us about his inspiration behind the sculpture:

“Flight of the Langoustine was the first in the series of sculptures made on Brighton Beach after a bit of beach-combing. A storm had deposited a mangled lobster pot yards from my first studio under the arches. In my imagination, this washed-up object had been a means of escape for the lobsters, and this translated itself into a human story of exodus and release – a dash for freedom". 

Four faceless human figures tilt and fall away - on and off objects that also teeter on a chaotic or shifting stage. They occupy the air and appear to float or flee in improbable spatial compositions; their means of support are seemingly nebulous. It is an exercise in a perfect but disquieting and tense equilibrium.  

Hove Plinth was unveiled in April 2018 as a new cultural landmark on the Hove seafront. The inaugural sculpture, Constellation, celebrates Hove's past and present and was created by Jonathan Wright. Constellation will make its new home at Hove Museum and make way for Flight of the Langoustine on 17th September.
