Carl Chapple

  • Originally from Dartmoor, Carl Chapple studied painting at St Martin's School of Art, London, before spending time in Greece, Turkey and Italy, further developing his interest in Classical and Renaissance sculpture and painting. Since returning to the UK in the mid-90s he has worked almost exclusively from the figure.

After a few years working from life in London, Carl moved to South Wales in 2003 and established a painting studio in Barry. Initially continuing to work from the nude, in around 2010 he began moving towards portraiture, first creating a series of paintings of local musicians, and later working with other stage performers, particularly standup comedians.

Most recently Carl’s practice has centred around collaborations with dancers, combining elements of both figure painting and portraiture, and exploring gesture, mood, narrative, and other themes.

Carl is artist in residence with the international dance company Ballet Cymru, and occasionally works with the Brighton-based contemporary dance company, Janes Wilton Dance. His work is held in collections across the UK and internationally, and is represented in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art Cymru.
