The Sussex coast serves as a continual inspiration for Adam’s work, and he has never lived far from the sea. However, travels across Europe provide an abundant source material for Adam’s most recent collections.
Evolving from a more Realist ethos, Adam’s paintings have become more concerned with the properties of oil paint than with a faithful representation of a subject. His work has a real physical presence, with textures and surfaces that are not easily reproduced when the work is photographed. Although abstract in nature, Adam’s work makes direct reference to real locations. The landscape is ever-changing, altered by weather patterns, light and season. The paintings aim to reflect these natural processes as layers of paint evolve towards finished images, with interventions where paint is scraped away or more viscous layers are poured across the surface before another layer is applied.
Adam's paintings often include structural references juxtaposed against areas of outstanding natural beauty. Originally inspired by the Cornish landscape, Adam experimented with the reintroduction of a figurative presence in his work, which continues as a recurring motif, providing narrative and a suggestion of scale within his compositions.

Originally from the Thames Estuary, Adam Bracey graduated from the University of Brighton in 1998, and for more than 20 years taught Art and Photography in universities, colleges and schools around the South of England.
Adam has exhibited in shows across the UK and Scotland.
