Craig sees his work as 3-dimensional paintings that are made with an experimental approach to ceramic materials. By applying materials in different ways, he is able to create a diverse range of mark-making techniques that are carefully applied to work in conjunction with the forms. He applies layers of materials to build up a richness to the surface and often creates areas of detail and focus that are contrasted with plainer, more open and quieter areas.
Since 2020, Craig has lived and worked in Cornwall and enjoys walking and observing the landscape. His latest body of work has been made in response to exploring these enigmatic Cornish surroundings. Craig’s work has always been made in response to his surroundings and the environment he finds himself in. However, he avoids making representational images and instead wishes to evoke a feeling of place through time.
The activity of collecting and exploring ideas through sketchbooks is an essential part of Craig's creative process. In sketchbooks, he can push boundaries, be playful, record and investigate without pressure, which helps in his work's continuous development. -
Craig Underhill was born in Scotland. He studied ceramics at Harrow College and then Fine Art at Portsmouth University, before moving to the Midlands, where he worked and lived for 20 years. Craig recently made the move to Cornwall, to an area that offers him a landscape that is a constant source of inspiration.
Although Craig works mainly in ceramics, he has a strong appreciation of other art forms and an interest in other artists' creative processes across various fields. He especially enjoys the work of Cy Twombley, Antoni Tapies and Ben Nicholson. -
Craig Underhill's ceramics are exhibited in galleries across the UK and Europe. His work is held in many private collections

Craig Underhill explores the effect of time on the landscape and places, turning grand vistas into intimate spaces. His slab-built vessels are treated as 3D canvases and worked into with various englobes, glazes and abstract marks.
